Pre-internet era

For the older ones Before the internet, how did you find other people who liked female bodybuilding?

Jan 14, 2025 - permalink

I started consuming content right at the start of the internet era. But from what I read and saw remnants of there were publications and IRL events to appreciate female muscle.

New York Muscle Club - was one one of the IRL events where women would do interviews and entertain an intimate crowd. (video)

Women's Strength Extravaganza - From what I saw this was similar to a strong man competition where top bodybuilders would compete in contests to display both strength and stamina in the late 80s early 90s. (video)

I think they were made aware of these events at the end of videos they bought or in Female Bodybuilder magazines. Great question OP. I would love to hear more for some of you who were actually there.

In the gym. There were always fit/muscular women in the gym. Frankly, it was easier to talk and meet with people pre-internet.

I am not sure if I count but I remember being strangely obsessed with athletic female legs on TV. like with gymnasts and Olympic diving. and my first sexual fantasy's already involved being dominated by powerful women either with super strength or magical powers. but I got a laptop with wifi when I was 13 so that accelerated things. I don't know adult life without internet. And I have never seen someone irl who is into this. I was really surprised at the amount of erotic female muscle stuff that existed online. compared to the real world were the closest thing was generic femdom with whips and stuff. everything else was vanilla. but most people avoid talking about sex in general. So a lot of random people I see may be into it but will never reveal it.

Life was sad back then!

Magazines with 5/6 pages of girls out of 100, VHS records of movies or TV programs, VHS rentals even for a single scene, like Strange Days with a muscular Louise Lecavalier beating up a guy, and so on.

Some rare real life encounters too.

As a kid I knew two women with muscular arms, a shop assistant and a family friend.

During summer, I did anything to meet them, knowing they wore sleeveless t-shirts. ๐Ÿ˜

The shop assistant was a fitness competitor, the family friend was obsessed with dumbbell exercises for some reason, and looked like a skinny Gina Farnsworth, with very vascular developed arms, and no other visible muscles.

I blushed and stared at her biceps silently.

Thanks to my young age, nobody understood why or even noticed my behaviour. ๐Ÿ˜…

I was born in the mid 1950s. During my teen years, I was never attracted to "skinny" girls. A shapely figure and some substance was most attractive. I loved watching women's figure skating. My favorite skater was Janet Lynn. She was known as a "strong" skater who regularly did moves that required substantial leg strength. IMHO, her legs were awesome. She could leap into the air like a gazelle. The other gal that developed my interest was Soviet Gymnast, Ludmilla Tourischeva. Another gal with great muscular legs. In the 70's more women started lifting weights and a few ventured into training to enhance their physique. Magazines like "Strength and Health" would occasionally feature such gals. Those features basically helped me to realize that I like my women to be strong with visible muscularity. I married such a gal and she's been weight training since the 70's.

That was a great story and happy ending.

There were plenty of ways. Go to the gym and I was fortunate that mine was filled with fbbs and some world class fbbs would stop in since the owner was Mr California. There were the old WSE strength extravaganza which was an hour away for me and I went to 4 or 5 times. There was ESPN. There was WPW. There was coverage of top women in all the strength publications.

The NY Muscle Club was mentioned but that was well after the internet was around. It was advertised all over the internet and I worked several of their shows. I would say it was better in some ways as you had to work to see the women. There was more personal interaction required and the women were not as afraid as they are these days. There were loads of ways and women with muscle on TV were much MORE common than now. The steroid scandal in baseball and other sports affected women's bodybuilding in a very bad way when they had the 20% rule. Women were told to lose 20% of their muscle. It was a confusing period. That seems to be gone again, though the sponsors never came back like they once were in the Cory or Lenda eras.

Do you mind sharing more about this experience @zig563? How did you start to work with them? What was a typical night like? How often did they host the event? What was your role in it all?

I was just a kid when it came out but I was always curious about it.

I went to a show as a fan b/c I wanted to see Colette Nelson and she and I had a nice conversation and she invited me to come back stage with her. One of the guys tried to kick me out and she said she had invited me. I introduced myself and I knew a few of the guys from DTV chat and message boards. They asked if I wanted to work there as one of the guys was leaving to start HB which is still going strong.

I worked the cash and security and got free shows for my efforts. We had a few shows per year. I probably worked 6 or 7, skipped one and then it became dead for whatever reason. Rent is not cheap in midtown Manhattan. You then had to pay the girls and the theatre's were not that big. It was interesting overall. I don't want to overshare. There were plenty of things I learned about certain girls, but nothing I should share. It was fun....kind of like an insider's pass. We would stay and have a drink with the fbbs or some of them if they were willing. Most had to leave or felt uncomfortable with the crowd...or did not drink.

That strength competition show is a fantastic idea, I love seeing FBBs show off their strength. They're obviously weaker than powerlifters, but that's not the point, I wanna see those muscles at work. HB should host something like that with their girls, I think they have all the resources to do that. Imagine Vladislava Galagan, Melinda Lindmark, Ariel Rose, Shannon Seeley, Blakelee Ortega doing pullups, curls, benching, all until faliure. Doesn't really matter who wins, just the competition would be fun and really hot.

American Gladiator helped kick start gwm for me in the early 90s.

I heard people back then were more willing to do sessions etc.

GMV tapes were amazing!

I had some fitness contests, Women Muscle Power, Kimberley Anne Jones, Pina Theodoridis, and a few more I can't remember.

Today we have everything available 24/7, we kind of take it for granted.

Back in the day, the only way for me was using my grandma's VCR, when she slept in the afternoon. ๐Ÿ˜…

It was literally impossible at home without getting caught.

I would love to see them bring it back with some sponsor. It would not be the same guys as 30-35 years ago sponsoring. They owned WPW and most of the FBB industry, so the money was different back then. Sponsors existed. We don't have that now.

Didn't. Well, not really anyway.

When I was in middle school, I would sometimes cut the pictures out of the magazines and carry them in my wallet to show off to my friends. Everyone was mostly like "no no!" but a few would sneak up to me later and confess it was "kinda cool", but "didn't want anyone else to know."

I had an acquaintance who 1989-90 who liked my magazine collection, but was nervous about anyone else knowing. And then there was good ol' Max in the early 90s. Max was a trip. He had NO qualms whatsoever about commenting on Lisa's calves which, to this very day, are probably the best I've ever seen in my life. lol He dated all different types of girls, but as a country boy, had a fondness for "big, strong girls who could help out with the farm work. I like 'em thick!"
