US presidential election 2024

Don't hold your breath everyone. The winner might not be known for weeks and we could be lucky to know by January. It could be like Florida in 2000, except this time with legal challenges and recounts in 3-7 states. It could be that close, and both sides are probably going to try to cheat, so the courts will probably have to get involved.

I strongly dislike both parties, so I have no dog in this fight.

To end, a question: do you think making voting compulsory would change anything?

i am from a country were we do that and no it wont it just causes people who don't care or don't know who the candidates are to vote for people because they look funny. but the us had a 2 party system here we get to choose between many parties some good some crazy ones .but they just end up fusing into a coalition so it feels more like a 2.5 party state

I know a lot of people who are preparing for the worst. Stocking up on food, ammo, etc. So for those watching around the world, the election is just the beginning. Post-election is when things are going to get very interesting (especially if Trump loses).

Personally, I don't care who wins. They're both awful candidates. However, I will say that I am a life-long republican and casted my first (and hopefully last) vote ever for a Democrat earlier today.

I voted Kamala for three primary reasons.

  1. Trump is a fraud. He's not a true republican nor conservative. On several occasions he has threatened gun rights, he is fiscally liberal, and he favors big gov. That's not what the republican party is supposed to be about.
  2. Given the above, he's not worth the volatility. America is better when the president isn't trying to stir shit and be seen every fucking day.
  3. The Trump campaign was overly obsessed with race and identity politics.

Whatever happens the world will still keep spinning and our life problems will continue, and our jobs will need us there. The sun will rise and set and all that jazz. I don't believe either candidate is truly good and I've accepted either outcome. It is what it is. People get sick and throw up when the announcement is made who won....for what? Life continues.

You're right Czach...the World will keep spinning. But, unless you work in a stone quarry that only sells stone locally, a sudden Tariff War could easily close the place you are working at now. Inflation will rise everywhere so high that you would be hard-pressed to afford a cabbage to live on for a week or longer. And all because of 1 person and the crowd of yes-sayers around him.

Well, Trump caused inflation with his tariffs (first time as Pres) and he's promised to do tariffs again but worse still...everyone on this planet is going to go bankrupt. Inflation Cause 101: Tariffs.

The tariffs didn't help matters, but he mainly caused it with his debt. He ran a higher deficit than Obama even before Covid hit. He ran the country the same way he runs his businesses.

Can anyone speak to what Kamala is running on? Because she sure can’t.

For the Americans that haven't voted yet, you do know that there are more than two choices, don't you? If even half of the people that vote (generally around 40-60% of registered voters actually vote) "throw your vote away" on a Libertarian, Green, or other party candidate, that will be a huge wakeup call.

Also, someone above said that they voted "against" someone. That's a terrible mistake. Vote FOR someone, not against someone else.

She’s running on Trump hate. Seems to be lots on her bandwagon here due the the progressive nature of this site.

a lot of men on this site want to be ruled over by a strong woman with an iron fist they would vote for a female version of Donald trump if that was an option

Go and watch the Joe Rogan and Elon Musk interview that dropped 6 hours ago. At the 1:11:00 mark, they discuss why Kamala and the democratic elite are actually the largest threat to democracy. The way Elon and Joe describe the political state, it completely summarizes what I had felt inside and what I had been telling close friends.

It’s pretty crazy what they say about the immigration problem

I'm actually planning on taking an Ambien and going to bed early LMAO.

As an American, I'm psychologically drained by this election and we aren't going to know the winner on Tuesday night anyway. I can live without the drama of election night. We probably won't know who won for a least a couple of days.

There is so much more at stake here than most people realize, it's low-key terrifying honestly. I am not a dramatic person at all. I'm not prone to hyperbole when it comes to serious matters like this. But the results of this election are going to have powerful, reverberating effects throughout the world.

It will affect Americans and many others due to potential policy changes and economic moves, but it's more than just that. If Trump wins this, it will prove to the world that his style of campaigning, speaking about issues wins elections. This will encourage even more candidates in local and state elections in the U.S. to follow that model and embrace populism and demagoguery. Worse, I think it will encourage it in other countries, especially in Europe.

Major periods of global conflict tend to come in 80-100 year cycles. As the last few people who were alive to witness the last one die off, humanity seems to get collective amnesia and we repeat the same old mistakes yet again.

We are teetering right on the precipice of just such a time. The last of the people who remember WW2 are dying off. Europe is in the midst of a migrant crisis and economic stress and the popularity of "strongmen" and authoritarian right wing rule is creeping every forward.

What's even worse is now we've got the damn Internet and the enemies of peace in Russia, Iran and North Korea are using it masterfully to stir up resentment and discord in America and elsewhere. Chaos is precisely what our enemies want. Chaos and a weak and distracted America and NATO work entirely to the benefit of the enemies of democracy.

Electing the "right" person in America won't stop all of that, but it would be a reason to have just a little more hope.

I hope I'm wrong guys, but I think if this thing goes the MAGA route, it is not going to end well for America or the world. No, the world won't end tomorrow. But we will be squirting lighter fluid on the fire and making it far less likely that future leaders will be able to get this thing back in the box before shit gets really bad.

I don't think America or Europe has the kind of moral fiber and unity it did during WW2. I don't think the current generations are made of the same stuff to be honest. At least for Americans I can speak, we're too busy trying to gain clout on TikTok and Instagram to sacrifice for the war effort. Can you see American's today buying war bonds or accepting rationing? Growing "victory gardens"? I sure can't.

The next major period of world conflict, if an when it comes, is going to be a whole new kind of awful that few of us can imagine, much less prepare for.

If you're an American and you haven't voted yet and you're even a little uncertain about your choice. Please give all of that some thought.

Play through the realistic "worst case scenario" with each candidate---based on things they've actually done and said, not what some slanted media site is TELLING out they will do.

Bring your conscience and your heart into that voting booth with you please. There is more at stake in this election than in any you've voted in before. That's a fact. And it's not just about the U.S. The choice you make is going to affect most of the free world directly or indirectly. Use your head, please.

Very well put.

And for the people wondering what Kamala is running on....

  1. She plans to try and fight inflation and interest rates to help our money go further.
  2. Significantly increase corporate taxes. Avoid increasing taxes on Americans making less than $400k. And increase tax credits for new parents.
  3. Support Ukraine

to name a few things

Trump will have secured and tallied the necessary 270 electoral votes to become the next POTUS before the sun rises Wednesday morning on the East Coast. The final tally most likely won't be known until several days later because the people that run the shows in the blue states need more time to surreptitiously count because that's the only way they know how to come up with enough votes to win. That, and fentanyl is cheap and abundant in all democrat run urban shitholes thanks to our wide open Southern Border. All that and they tend to have very weak math skills due to their 'common core' approach. Remember, these are the same people who SPENT an additional $1,750,000,000,000 above and beyond what was appropriated for the budget TO CURB INFLATION. This time around, however, it won't be as painful for the rest of us to have to watch them go at their own pace because the slacker States results won't make any difference. There will have already been enough results from States that have their shit together to declare Trump as the winner. Trump can win WITHOUT Pennsylvania. Harris CANNOT!.

I could eat a bowl of alphabet soup and shit out a more worthwhile response than that. Maybe it would help you if you waited until you're secure in your safe space before you attempt any further correspondence with strangers.

I'm not interested in arguing politics on a message board, I'm simply stating that Trump will lose. Without making any comment on his platform, he's run an objectively disastrous campaign and it will cost him. Kamala Harris will be the next President because she avoided the myriad self-inflicted wounds that Trump couldn't, eg, choosing Vance for VP, his comments about Puerto Ricans, his comments about Haitians, tying himself directly to Elon Musk, etc. If anybody needs a safe space, it'll be you.

He’s gone too far alienated too much of his fan base, the MSG rally and his recent talks on tariffs did him no favors.. he’s done.

The biggest reason he lost in 2020 was because he alienated suburban white female voters. For whatever reason, he chose to quadruple down on his anti-woman rhetoric this time around. It's going to cost him once again.

I literally have card-carrying members of the Federalist Society in my immediate family who aren't voting for him because of how embarrassing he is. If you lose those people, you have no chance.

People claiming to not know what her platform is are being purposefully ignorant, or just trolls. The information is out there, on her website, her rallies, etc.
