I dont think some people know what they put their bodies through leading up to these contest days. Their bodies are starving for food and water. As amazing as they look, its insanely unhealthy.

100% correct.... this is why I don't put myself though this anymore.... So many people either do this by themselves or with some asshole, know nothing trainer. Some people resort to putting things into their bodies near showtime, that are really dangerous and shouldn't be messed around with, all for the sake of a title. Not saying Patti did anything but she was in serious destress and certainly her electrolyte balance was way off, which can be life threatening. I would have pulled her off the stage after the continued problems she was having. I hope and pray she's alright and has gotten her body chemistry straightened out.
It's really no wonder why so many young bodybuilders eventually reach the conclusion that this just isn't "fun" anymore or healthy for that matter. Cindy Phillips, Dani Reardon, Rosanna Harte, Slava Galagan, Hayley McNeff, and Georgina McConnell just to name a few all reached this conclusion and wondered: "Why am I torturing myself like this?"
There's been a relevant discussion going on in another thread about the harmful effects of diuretics (apparently leading to death in some cases). Alena Kosinova (may she RIP) passed away on the same day she was set to step on stage. A lot of people on social media have been pointing the finger at her coach, Shelby Starnes. I actually just finished watching another video where Stephanie Flesher talks about her experience with using diuretics and how it almost killed her, and she was obviously shaken up by the death of Alena (as many have been).
But the point of all of this (as it relates to this thread)... In that video in the original post above, Patti Hanson is on the verge of collapsing. Who was her coach? That's right, Shelby Starnes.
You could look at this in one of two ways. On the one hand, these competitors are all adults and are capable of making their own decisions and could always decide to just say no. On the other hand however, they do place a lot of trust in their coaches because they need that guidance from them and they expect that these coaches know enough not to lead them down a path that could lead to their death.

It's really worrying that so many women are rushing to his defense.

This guy is a cancer.....how many others have almost died because of his shitty advice?
As little as 3 have died, as many as 4 or 5 if I can get someone to verify that number (hopefully they respond to me). Not counting any collapses
Not counting any collapses
That would be the more important number, I think. Because how many people have come close to death as a result of their intense prep cycle? I think that number would be rather large, but of course it would be hard to track since hardcore competitors tend to shrug it off or just don't talk about it.

Didn't Hayley McNeff have something very similar happen to her in her last competition years ago?

You are correct.in that these athletes are adults, and at the end of the day they are the ones most responsible for what they put in their bodies and how they manage their health. That being said, when you are a competitor, you put a lot of trust into your coach, and as a coach, your job isn’t only to help your athlete perform the best they can, but also to prevent them from getting injured or worse. Because sometimes, that competitive spirit and desire to win can muddle an athlete’s stance on what is best for their well-being.
For example take MMA and boxing trainers. If they are seeing their fighter getting pummeled and looking incapable of defending themself, it is responsibility to stop the fight. The fighter may be upset at the stoppage, and knowing a lot of fighters that would rather “go out on their shield,” instead of smartly conceding, it is that much more important that they have a trainer who cares more about their health than the win. Or, let’s take a CrossFit or Olympic lifting coach. There might be an athlete who can put up a lot of weight on a lift with awful technique that can lead to injury. A good coach would be one who makes their athlete strip weight from the bar so they can get the technique and mobility down, even if said athlete wants to lift heavier.
With Shelby Starnes, it is worrying that this many competitors have died under his watch. That can’t be a coincidence.
I imagine Jake's decision is a direct result of the backlash after Alena's death. However, I don't know how he plans to enforce it. I don't think it will change how competitors train and prep (at least not immediately). And depending on how this changes the judges' scoring criteria, this may lead to some controversial placings this year. Someone who would typically come in with amazing conditioning and win any other year, may end up placing 8th this year.
Where is this video of Jake? It doesn't seem to be on the Wings of Strength IG page.
Not sure what her name is, but keep your eye on the woman in green in the middle. Kind of a reminder of what a physical toll this takes on their bodies.
The full vid is on youtube. I just cut it down to the relevant parts.
EDIT: Just confirmed she's Patti Hanson.
