What are the women like at your gym?

Dec 11, 2024 - permalink

I live in a suburb of a small European city; my nearest gym isn't a bodybuilding gym but rather what would probably be best described as a health club. Of everyone I've seen there (over the course of three years, going five days a week) I can count on one hand the number of women who could conceivably appear on a site like this, just one of whom competes. The overwhelming majority are, in terms of physique, the very definition of average.

I've never really given it much thought, as I'm there to work out, not to perve.

Recently, however, a new arrival popped up: a former D1 basketball player who's been signed to the local team (weird, as professional ball is barely a thing in these parts). In short, it's kinda shocked me how much she stands out, as she's basically bigger, taller, faster, stronger, fitter, and whatever-else-er than every other chick in the place. I found myself wondering if the average gym in a US college town is teeming with these types of ladies, and we're just missing out where I am🤣

So, yeah. Simple enough question really — what's the GWM situation like where you work out?

I haven't been to the gym for a while but they are all just skinny or fat and don't talk to anyone. and for every woman there were like 10 men

Ordinary gym mix with a solid helping of local, regional and national-level athletes (mainly swimming, field hockey, netball and rugby).

There is one particularly fit pro tennis player (babe, 6ft tall) and one particularly jacked crossfitter (built similar to Kara Someoneorrather...Aussie girl...also a babe).

Lots of non-athlete types who only seem to do sumo deadlifts and weighted hip thrusts.

Some IG wannabes who film every set of stair climber/KB swing supersets.

Basically, most free weight-heavy gyms in the western world.

It depends on the time when I go. However today there was a lady like 35 yo and she look a little bit fat on her face but she had such big muscle legs. I cannot get her out of my head. She was doing death lifts right in front of me and she looked really tight. I hope to see her tomorrow

I go to a fitness gym so it has every type of women there. And yes I've seen a few fbbs there. Though I live close to Dave Fisher's Powerhouse gym I can't afford two memberships right now or I'll be going there where I might see more muscle bunnies!

Go to two gyms.

One is a family oriented gym. Usually just has moms trying to keep themselves in shape. Nothing too serious.

The other is a powerlifting/bodybuilding gym. They have 2 IFBB pro's and several women that have competed at the NPC level

I primarily go to a big box gym in a popular neighborhood of Brooklyn. The women on average are professionals, in their 20s to 30s and best described as having none to little muscle tone. They would probably be considered very attractive IRL by typical guys who are indifferent to buff women. However, there are about fifteen regulars who are very athletic and visibly muscular. One of these looks like an FBB and she has many attributes of someone who may be taking steroids. Interestingly, I have worked out next to her many times and do not find her attractive, preferring some of the other buff women or even a few of the typical pretty ones.

Here in Denmark, the women at the gym are quiet and hard-working.

In the streets, it seems many Danish women are slender but strong. I don't go to the gym very often, but I have noticed a few women moving more weight than I thought they should be because of their body size. Generally, though, I don't notice them, because Scandinavians as a rule are not trying to be "noticed".

The biggest takeaway, though? This is a very fit country with very little obesity.

I train at a big strongman gym and there are a few really strong girls there. My girlfriend squats over 315 and has loaded a 200 pound sandbag. There is another young girl who is on here that power lifts and is like 4’10 ball of muscle. There’s quite a few “strong fat” girls as well. This gym is obviously an exception and even here those girls are still more a minority. My girlfriend knows a lot of the local gym rat women and muscle girls are still pretty rare overall.

At my local New York Sports Club location in NYC's Flatiron area, we have almost all regular women, all ages, some fit, some not so fit.

I would say the most fit ladies we ever see here might be fitness models or trainers. A famous FBB -- I think it was Colette Nelson, if memory serves me -- did work out here for a month or so some years back, but she stuck out like a sore (or at least swollen!) thumb.

Meanwhile our NYSC is probably the last somewhat reasonably priced gym in my neighborhood, now that Equinox and Chelsea Fitness have built new locations supposedly charging several hundred dollars a month for membership.

Paying that kind of moolah would sure get MY heart racing, but not for the right reasons!

This is a great thread, medallin, thanks for starting it. There are a lot of women at my gym, of all shapes and sizes. Many come with their partners. Most are in good condition, meaning they look fit but not muscular. We had a Korean girl working out regularly in 2023 who was a level above, though. She had a well-developed physique and went about her training like a pro. Heavy weights, too. Her legs and glutes were her standouts, though not hugely muscled, and she had a great V taper. She'd often wear shorts like Brazilian volleyball players, and a lot of young guys used to hang around watching her. Pretty blatantly, too. I always got the sense she didn't like but was too polite to say anything. A guy I catch up with often said he saw her in a sports bra once. Said she had an eight-pack which I can well believe. Anyway, about this time last year she stopped coming. Pity . . . There are still a lot of regular girls there daily. Three in particular I've got to know pretty well and we are part of a group of 7 or 8 that meet up on Socials and outside of the gym. Mid-20s, Chinese, all lifting heavy with leg presses, RDLs, squats and leg extensions, and they have great legs and glutes. I jumped on the leg extension rig after one a few weeks back. Pin was in the stack where she'd left it. Couldn't complete a single rep, and she'd been smashing them out like it was nothing at all. she's been playing soccer and lifting since she was a kid, and is now a sub-national level state player a season or two away from national selection. She says she's "genetically strong" in the lower body but she conceded she was weak in the upper body, and envied the weight males curl, bench etc. She added she needed to go light sometimes otherwise her thighs grow too big which impacted her game. Despite their strength and physical fitness, none of these girls would make the cut to feature on GWM, except the Korean girl, maybe, as they are not jacked and in regular street clothes you wouldn't really know they lifted.

So yeah….my university was full and I mean full of buff girls. I had a few classes with some of them. My first day at my university was with an ex Olympian gymnast. No joke she was buff as hell. I’ve seen the track girls walking around the school. I, even, had a bodybuilding competitor in class. I can only speak for my university, but I've been to others around my state and they had about the same.

I go to a pretty simple yet effective gym, where people usually go to stay in health rather than building serious muscle. I've been going for six months now, and so far no women with enough muscularity to enter this site. Women around the world are not too willing to become muscular, and where I live muscular women are still pretty stigmatized as "masculine", "that's not a woman", "women are supposed to be delicate"... so on so forth. So, yeah, women tend to work out just to stay healthy and develop thick lower body.

There were only two women that stood out, tho; one was naturally thick and had some serious guns and general muscle mass, and the other one was less buff but she had amazing abs. The abs girl went for two weeks or so, the other one still goes to the gym.

I used to do CrossFit, and stopped going a few years ago due to injury. Like most other answers so far, there was a broad spectrum of shapes and sizes going there, and many were a feast for the eyes!

Don’t get me wrong, the ones who actually entered the competitions and suchlike, they were usually quite tall, bulky, ripped, and kinda… blocky… to look at. Obviously they were very fit, and one or two were very strong.

Me personally, I always preferred the really strong women. Doesn’t really matter what their body fat level was, although you didn’t ever really get obese women at CrossFit, you did occasionally get tall, broad, BUILT women. I loved those! You get a 6ft tall big shouldered gal walk in for her first session, she’d get taught the basics of a deadlift, and by the end of the session she’d be lifting 140kg, because she was incredibly strong when she walked in.

Also, a brief note on American colleges. I went to Arizona State in 2001 and that campus was by far and away the place where I saw the most female muscle. I’m not saying they were all jacked, but blimey the abs, the calves, the thighs. Some of the girls there were in incredible shape. There were yolked athletes and yolked non-athletes there too.

Strongest woman I’ve ever met in my life was a 6’3” in bare feet Polish-American Chicago girl called Evie, who was just a big old thing and lifted heavy heavy weights with the ASU football team two or three times a week.

No, she seems very shy and i don’t want her to feel uncomfortable. She is amazing! She is a small girl, but Lifts more than Most guys. For example shoulder dumbell press with 22 kg (3x10)
