Livestream for Nihon Class 2024 (tomorrow): https://ohen.tv/broadcast/304786

changed to https://youtube.com/live/3P2LZWSsiFE?feature=share (due to high access rates)

(schedule https://www.jbbf.jp/attachments/08d496c39ccc3...; female physique - 3 classes - starts at 14:50 Japan Time and ends at 19:02 Japan Time; about 2 hours total)

(The Youtube Video is private and the stream on ohen.tv is gone.)

37 athletes; for many top athletes this will be the first competition of the year.

Youtube-Videos:

The three champions (screenshot from livestream):

Some instagram posts from the athletes (seems no group photos this time):

  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_xOIUoyWj9/ (Miyazaki Yûko, No 2, 8th place class -158 cm; google translation: "8th place Top 6th place advance to the finals. Failed to qualify in the ranking I wanted to do a free pose. On the way home, Mt. Fuji showed me a little🗻 It was a match where I really felt how useless I was. I know it's not that easy. But it's still frustrating to lose. I know that all the athletes are working hard with various things in various backgrounds.")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_rUgSly5ry/ (Ôsawa Naoko, No 5, 5th place class -158 cm; google translation: "Japan Class Women's Physique Championships 5th place Thank you to everyone for your support")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_s87lqyhBT/ (Ogishima Junko, No 7, 1st place class -158 cm; google translation: "This was my first domestic competition of the season, and I wasn't satisfied with my performance, but I think I was able to show who I am now. Next is the Japan Championships! I want to challenge myself in the best possible body. I want to be myself and have no regrets.")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_tfTtxzSKp/ (Fujiwara Ayaka, No 10, 3rd place class -158 cm; google translation: "Thankfully, I was able to receive my first medal at a national competition! I'm so happy✨. This season, I've been focusing on improving my posing and on conditioning and caring for my body. I feel that the results have borne fruit, even if only a little. And I was so happy to be called to the first call and had the dreamlike experience of standing next to Ogishima-san and Shimizu-san, the top athletes in the All Japan Championships, and having the valuable experience of being compared to the top athletes!")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_10Wy7OW4l/ (Ben'ya Tomoko, No 13, 11th place class -158 cm; google translation: "I was aiming to be in the top 12, but I ended up in 11th place👍")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_rInMVzBT2/ (Sakamori Kaori, No 26, 2nd place class -163 cm; google translation: "JBBF Japan Class Championship Women's Physique 163cm and under. I won second place. There were times when I thought I might not be able to participate. It's a miracle that I was able to get on stage and receive this wonderful award. ")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_8O9vBTEQx/ (Harada Rika, No 36, 1st place class 163+ cm; google translation: "I was able to win the Japan Class Over 163cm competition that was held the other day 🏆 This was my second class competition this year. I came in second in my first competition, the Japan Open, and it would be a big achievement to win it🥹 I had a strange confidence, so I almost lost it after the shock of not winning🥲 There are still more competitions to come🔥 I'll do my best for the Japan Championships on October 6th💪🏾 I hope I can be among them at the Japan Championships😊")

some trivia:

  • It's Ogishima Junko's fifth consecutive win in JBBF tournaments: Tokyo 2023 - Japan Open 2023 - Nihon Class -158cm 2023 - Nihon Physique 2023 - Nihon Class -158cm 2024 (I think Yamanouchi Satoko holds the record for the time after 2010: ten consecutive wins between Nihon Class 2011 and Nihon Physique 2016).
  • I think it's the first time Fujiwara Ayaka wore earrings at a tournament.
  • 9 of the Top 12 of Nihon Physique 2023 were competing. Urushima Miki won Tokyo 2024 and Yano Kazumi entered Japan Open 2024. Therefore only Murayama Ayano has stayed away from a tournament so far.

After this tournament, I would roughly rank the top athletes as follows:

  • (group 1: surely Top 12 of Nihon Physique 2024) Ogishima Junko, Shimizu Eriko, Fujiwara Ayaka, Hashiboku Akiko, Ôsawa Naoko; Sawada Megumi, Sakamori Kaori; Harada Rika
  • (group 2a: good chances to reach Top 12) Miyashita Akina, Yano Kazumi, Urushima Miki, Niinuma Takayo, (Murayama Ayano, absent so far)
  • (group 2b: low chances to reach Top 12) Kasuga Chiharu, Miyazaki Yûko, Nakamura Sayaka; Satô Nanako, Shimizu Yôko; Yoshikawa Chihiro; Katayama Megumi, Tomizawa Rie
  • (group 3a: good chances to survive 1st round) Itô Miyo, Ben'ya Tomoko, Numata Hatsue; Yasuda Atsuko, Hoshimiya Utsuko; Shikata Chie; Yoshida Chieko; (Yoshioka Misato, Takahashi Noriko, absent so far; Kabasawa Sachiko, active but not on stage)
  • (group 3b: low chances to survive 1st round) Kinugasa Tomo; Horie Kazumi; Hirata Manami, Ishiwata Miyako, Oshibuchi Natsuko, Kitamura Akiko, Kuriyama Emi, Nakai Kyôko

I was so thrilled to be on the same stage as all the top athletes. And it was an emotional day where I learned that there's still a long way to go between 4th and 3rd place. Anyway, I was honestly so happy that I made it through the preliminaries, and I was so thrilled with myself 🤪")
  • https://www.instagram.com/p/C_-MdfhTq-b/ (Fukasaku Yasuko, No 24, 5th place class 60+ years; google translation: "A competition where I compete on the same stage as builders from all over the country, whom I only get to meet once a year. The Masters Championship is very meaningful to me. This was the last competition of the year, so I was hoping to make it to the finals! I ended up in 5th place. I am very happy to have made it to the finals and been able to do the free pose again. I have some things to reflect on, but I made it to the last competition without any problems!")

Is there anything about the younger Japanese female fitness/bikini/figuere/physique/bodybuilding scene? I don’t mind these mature women, but I find myself more invested in the younger generations.

Is there anything about the younger Japanese female fitness/bikini/figuere/physique/bodybuilding scene? I don’t mind these mature women, but I find myself more invested in the younger generations.

Only 10 to 15 % of the active Japanese female physique competitors are younger than 40 years and only Fujiwara Ayaka and Miyashita Akina play a prominent role. So fitness/bikini competitions might be more interesting.

I would recommend to watch videos from channels https://www.youtube.com/@project7619/videos, https://www.youtube.com/@fitness-taro/videos and https://www.youtube.com/@vitupofficial/videos.

The Muscle Gate tournaments shown at https://www.youtube.com/@GOLDSGYMJPOFFICIAL/videos have several fitness or bikini categories.

Livestream for Nihon Physique 2024 (on Sunday): https://ohen.tv/broadcast/304814; also on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CCVn73kXh4 (youtube-channel of ohen.tv: https://www.youtube.com/@TV-hg4un)

(schedule https://www.jbbf.jp/attachments/d2caa0ae42f8d...; female physique starts at 14:59 Japan Time and ends at 18:33 Japan Time; about 106 minutes total)

37 of 41 athletes have fulfilled their qualification through tournaments this year. Katayama Megumi (12th place Nihon Physique 2022) and Atago Tamako (10th place Nihon Physique 2021) qualified through Nihon Physique of the last five years. Adachi Akiko (9th place Nihon Physique 2014) and Ôkura Shimae (winner Osaka prefecture 2009) must have needed a recommendation from their association. (82 athletes met the qualification criteria this year and 37 of them entered Nihon Physique.)

I updated the diagram of the average age of all competitors in 3 major tournaments (Nihon Physique, Japan Open, Nihon Class) since 2010:

The overall trend to older athletes continues.

Since entry list of the Kitaku Open tournament has been published, I can provide an overall statistic: 149 athletes participate(d) in 2024 JBBF female physique category. Last year 131. Which mean the "boom" that started in 2016 is not over yet.

As a result, I was not picked for the first round of pick-up😔 The challenges are obvious. As a women's physique, I'm still too immature in terms of muscle mass, preparation, and posing. .")

At least be called by a pick ・ I couldn't advance to the finals, but I felt that I had made a good result. I was very satisfied with my results. Also, I was moved to be standing on the same stage as the athletes who are synonymous with Japanese women's physique! It was a happy time.")

(Videos marked (A) by channel https://www.youtube.com/@shinchan1942; (B) by channel https://www.youtube.com/@%E5%BB%A3%E7%94%B0%E...)

2003 was the second Miss Nihon competition for Osawa Naoko, who ended her career after the 2024 tournament. During this year's tournament, the announcer mistakenly requested the abs pose. Ôsawa Naoko and Satô Nanako took this pose for fun (while the others hit the anticipated side triceps pose):

So I checked the older Miss Nihon competitions for a comparison (when the abs pose was still a mandatory pose). The 2003 competition was a good example:

Ôsawa Naoko (大澤 直子) in 2003 (34 years old) and in 2024 (55 years old). Her first Miss Nihon competition was in 2001.

Two other athletes from the 2003 Miss Nihon competition are still active:

Yasuda Atsuko (安田 敦子) in 2003 (29 years old, her first Miss Nihon competition) and in 2024 (50 years old, Nihon Class).

Adachi Akiko (足立 晃子) in 2003 (35 years old) and in 2024 (56 years old). She has at least participated in the 1998 competition.

(However, none of the three athletes were continuously active.)

The last screencap is a size comparison between the equally tall Mizuma Utako (水間 詠子, eventual champion) and Katô Yûko (加藤 優子, her last contest was in 2022).

Winner: Yoshimatsu Yû (吉松 優; No. 94); 2nd Place: Arai Akiko (新井 暁子; No. 96); 3rd Place: Hayashi Tamaki (林 環; No. 97); 4th Place: Takamura Naomi (高村 奈緒美; No. 98); 5th Place: Tsubaki Harumi (椿 晴美; No. 99); 6th Place: Inaba Emi (稲葉 絵美; No. 95); 7th Place: Sugahara Junko (菅原 順子; No. 36).

Yoshimatsu Yû and Arai Akiko received the same number of points in both rounds. The tie was broken because 4 of the 7 judges had placed Yoshimatsu Yû ahead of Arai Akiko. Second victory for Yoshimatsu Yû after winning Muscle Gate Kanagawa. Arai Akiko has not won anything yet.

I think it is the first Muscle Gate event where the female physique athletes were called in two groups.
