Does anyone know if there is an archive with the magazines. I was too young in the era when magazines were popular and I don't think the shops in my region had anything apart from playboy and maxim and other mainstream stuff anyway. some people post high quality pictures scanned from the magazines but I wonder what the entire thing is like

Interesting subject. In the UK in the late 80s there was:

Bodybuilding Monthly (British, Occasional female bodybuilding images and items)

Muscle Mag (American and usually with a bit more female muscle)

Flex - mostly male bodybuilding focused.

Le Monde Du Muscle (French and bought on a school day trip - how I pulled that off undetected I’ll never know! Quite a lot of female bodybuilding content)

And the holy grail - Female Bodybuilding. Hard to find in newsagents even in London. And only came out quarterly. Issues seemed pretty erratic. But if you found it, it was the stuff of a UK schmoes dreams around that time.

But then Muscle Elegance (Mid 90s) came a long with the internet not far behind.

That’s my recollection anyway.

I have a whole bunch of them: some Muscle and Fitness from the 80s and 90s and most WPWs 80s-early 2000s. Purchase interests?

Flex was good when it first started out sadly towards the end it ended up being accused of descrimination after the last copies afore it went out of print had no women bodybuilders in it

you forgot Dianne bennets bodypower magazine and muscle and co and health and strength

bodybuilding monthly and muscle and co were run by bodybuilders Dave Williams and Caroline Lewis and lens man Chris Lund sadly when Dave died in the 1990s it was sold to a publishing house who had no idea of what they were doing ..

muscle mag sadly went out of print after its owner Robert kennedy died ..

NABBA pulled the plug on health and Stength shame on them

Dianne Bennetts bodypower simply ran out of money to keep it going

muscle and Fitness flex and muscle training illustrated and WPW made it over here

the first 2 were run by the weider brothers .. MTI was run by Dan Laurie who said he was force to throw in the towel when some bodybuilders wanted more than the going rate for appearing in the magazines

WPW ran out of money

Ridiculous the amount of bodybuilders with enough money to have saved any of the magazines

Muscular development made it over here although that is now also out of print mind you that was accused of failing to put women bodybuilders in that mag too towards the end

💯 by then I had already moved on. Not only power and sizzle but they also had the swimsuit issue and introduced lingerie. My first time seeing FBBers photographed liked this and enjoyed it very much. Once they got rid of all that, I wqs done w/ flex magazine

You have a better memory! Come to think of it Bodypower does ring a bell. Totally forgot Muscular Development, that was quite a big one, but again not a huge amount, but some, of FBB content. Some months you could hit the jackpot though. Ditto with Muscle & Fitness. And I did see the odd Women’s Physique World come to think of it, in the very early 90s. Can’t quite remember but possibly bought one with Raye Hollitt on the cover in a yellow bikini doing a side chest. Good times! It all depends on what the newsagents were deeming sellable. That being said, was grateful for all of it. That’s all we had back then! Until the videos started appearing on the shelves of big retailers like HMV on Oxford Street! Followed by the internet ramping up mid 90s, and we were off to the races!

Barnes & Noble (at least the one by me here in NY) still has a fairly decent magazine section with some fitness and bodybuilding related magazines

And she continues to make money via cam and sessions while the mags are long gone. Which of them had the business brains?

Women's Physique World was a hard-core classic. I think reproductions of its pages are available on line.

this was a year before the last 3 went out of print, women bodybuilders past and present were asked to get involved in the campain to persuade editors to put women bodybuilders back into the magazines

It should have been hold on to your hat and hold the front page news instead Wendy Mcready and Lisa Cross replied they could not be bothered ..

Paula Bircumshaw . Bernie Price .. kimberly anne jones to name a few were contacted by some one from our gym on social media sadly to no reply

If I had the same amount of hard core muscle as Colette Guimond or similar I would have got the campain going

Sport & fitness in the mid to late 80's was quite good. Available in the UK and concentrated mostly on European contests I seem to remember. Had quite a lot of female content, mostly NABBA I think. In the UK in the late 80's there were so many magazines I didn't know which ones to buy, so had to flick through them all before buying them: Bodybuilding monthly, Body Power, Muscle & Co, physiques international, etc.

at the time I had a fairly well paid job so I used them to pick all of them up of the shelf and buy them .I still have a copy of sports and fitness one or two others ..

problem was I was not able to rescue all of them when the gym closed down so only have a handful some times if I save up I try to get one off E bay ..

like I said I miss going to the news stand and buying them , often wonder what happened to all the bodybuilders that were featured in all these magazines . be nice if any one had catch up .
