The State of Female Bodybuilding

Aug 27, 2024 - permalink

Hi, everyone. I'm a big fan of this site but I don't follow competitive bodybuilding very closely. I've read some things about how the bodybuilding division was shut down about a decade ago, leaving Physique as the heaviest/largest women's division. Then I think Wings of Strength was formed in response to that - does it have a full-on bodybuilding division? Are there any competitions these days where women try to become as big and muscular as possible (obviously symmetry and leanness still matter)? Would really appreciate if anyone can give me a full explanation of the current situation. Thanks a lot to anyone who helps out!

Around a decade ago, the women's bodybuilding division faced challenges, particularly in mainstream acceptance and media coverage. This led to its decline in popularity, and some organizations, including the International Federation of Bodybuilding & Fitness (IFBB), decided to phase out the women's bodybuilding division. In its place, other divisions like Women's Physique, Figure, and Bikini became more prominent, with Women's Physique being the most muscular division among them.
