I'm a Jim Cornette listener myself. He really hates AEW for some reason. Lol I don't hate AEW.

I don't agree with Jim Cornette on a lot, but his Kentucky drawl is like chewing gum for the ears, lol

Don't blame him.

I'm in the UK and the wrestling boom here happened in 1992 rather than the '80s and then again in 2000 it was massive. Personally I watched WWF from about 1991/2 until '95 and then lost interest in until late '98 and then watched it from then until Vince bought WCW and haven't really bothered watching since. Saw some of the old school ECW video tapes as well. One of my housemates in my last house is a huge wrestling fan and I would sometimes watch AEW with him.

As far as the GWM in wrestling Lita and Chyna were my favs. A bit after my time in terms of watching it but I also like Mickie James and Becky Lynch

As an American I kind of felt sorry for the UK fans since WWF tried to push the British Bulldog with the European title, only for the belt to quickly become a joke within a short span once non-Europeans began holding the title, and eventually Shane McMahon...

Now I know she isn't popular and I really get why, but is it just me or has Maxxine Dupri been gaining seriously? A year ago she was just skinny with a hint of Quads, now there is some muscle. Like this week for example, am I the only one that noticed her shoulders for example?

I've only just found out that Kayla Rossi has wrestled. One of my favs.

Gonna go to a friend's house to watch Wrestlemania tomorrow.

I haven't regularly watched wrestling since the late 2009s-early 2010s, when John Cena was at the top and TNA tried revitalizing a Monday Night War and got Hulk Hogan and a bunch of his cronies thinking it would help (it didn't.) The product just sucked in both TNA and WWE and I stopped watching.

I have Peacock and have mostly been using it to re-watch Attitude Era WWF (what I grew up with,) but I occasionally watch bits and pieces of contemporary era-WWE, and some of it is not too bad. The thing that I like the most is how much their women's division not only improved, but how they are now booked as actual working wrestlers as opposed to being relegated to a valet role or merely eye candy. As much as I have nostalgic feelings for the late 90s and early 2000s, the way they treated women was really indicative of the era and was just pure cringe.

I haven't been watching much wrestling myself Gatsby, but from what I've seen you're completely right about the women's division. Even just a few years ago you had to watch the Triple H-booked NXT to see women booked correctly.

And these women today are on another level of size and athleticism from the vast majority of female wrestlers of the past. There are two females in AEW who are nearly as big as their significant others, though AEW does seem to have a lot of smaller male wrestlers.

I'd say the only era of women's wrestling that matches today's is 1990's Japanese women's wrestling.

I want to like AEW, and when they came on the scene they had at least some potential to, while extremely unlikely to overtake WWE, at least be a viable competitor to them. But WWE's product improve notably when Vince stepped down from creative and Triple H took over (and, like you said, was the person who really improved the women's division.) Now, the booking in AEW is routinely poor, and Tony Khan seems more interested in going on cocaine-fueled rants on Twitter.

I'm in total agreement with you guys. I grew up watching wrestling. Used to love it but fell out years ago. Once the Attitude era was over I started to loose interest. It was always a soap opera but once the show would open with 20-30minutes of talking before anything actually happened I got bored.

The women's division has always been an after thought. Sometimes even third. When I was a kid we had a couple of actually good wrestlers. Then we had the lingerie match era. LPWA was a nice bright spot if you had it in your area. But mostly it was here and there maybe a little. I tuned in the other night and they had 2 women's matches and one of them was the main event. And another thing backstage. I was blown away.

I have my favorites from back in the day and I will always love them but the girls today are the best they've ever been in my opinion. These matches are better (not all of course but still) Girls flying through the air, taking major bumps. And FIT. Damn. We used to just have Chyna. Maybe a bit of muscle on Medusa. We took what we could get. Now we've got Rhea, Jade, Bianca, Jordynne. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Abs everwhere. LOL. I'm getting back into this and can't wait to watch Wrestlemania.

If it was just women's matches, then I'd probably make the effort to watch it. Perhaps I should DVR this crap and then FF to the women's matches. I know it's a complete pipe dream, but I'd love to see more intergender matches - with the women winning, of course.

@Gatsby28 - I don't know if you've seen this already, but here's a "Cocaine" song parody about Tony Khan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeAzcIVsjGg

That's literally what I'm doing @ILFM123. I couldn't give a toss about the men's matches. Maybe it'd be fun to watch and get back into it all but these things are 2 & 3 hours long every week.

Apr 06, 2024 - permalink

Yeah, 2 & 3 hours - PER SHOW! Who the hell has the time or the desire to sit there and watch 5, 7, 9 or whatever hours of wrestling per week?!? Just another reason why wrestling is becoming so niche and only for the diehard wrestling geeks.

I don't want the women to lose opportunities on the main shows, but for selfish reasons I wish there was a women's-only wrestling show.

Checked out the entire buy one get one free Wrestlemania 40 event and honestly the card doesn't look that exciting. Looking forward to the tag team main event on night one, Styles vs. Knight, Cody vs. Roman, Seth vs. Drew and probably that's all. Other than those this event looks dull.

My eyes glazed over just reading that. I only care about the women.

As someone who was a pro wrestling fan back in the say, while I do love watching the women for obvious reasons, I also enjoy watching the men wrestle as well, so long as it's a good match.

The problem with the WWE is that there is just no competition. Competition makes people and organizations better, because without it, there is not real incentive to work to give the best product possible. The closest that WWE had was back when it was the WWF and WCW posed a serious threat to dominating the businesses. But after they fell, TNA tried and it was laughably pathetic, and AEW made a pretty strong case as a possible emerging threat when they first came on, but now they're falling into bad booking and dumb businesses decisions.

AEW is absolutely horrendous. Their vice presidents tag team known as the Young Bucks constantly put themselves in the title picture all the time and their matches come out as boring. Tony Khan really needs to make stars fast because WWE will win the category again and again.

I never quite understood the fascination with the Young Bucks. I always thought they their name should be the Young Spot Monkeys.

I could come up with all sorts of real or made-up-but-plausible female tag-teams I'd rather watch.

Same here. Never understood the Young Bucks either. Seems to me that they want to over use their power behind the scenes a little bit too much.

Aren't they also tiny? These days you could pretty easily come up with a female tag-team that'd be more physically intimidating than them.
