I've always felt oh-so-surprised when this happens. The same (recently appeared in the woman's IG / Twitter) image you posted reappears a week later but oh-surprise, it's 10% (or similarly) larger. Of course, it overwrites your own post since it has "better resolution".

Yeah, the other mods have been notified about it so they should know what to look for. As always, if there is an image you think might have been merged the wrong way then you're welcome to message the staff or send a report (I know you know but this is for anyone reading this).
BTW these artificially blown up images will cause problems with the merge logic which prioritises larger image sizes. This means as mods we will need to manually adjust the merge in these cases. If you do believe an image was merged into a blown up one, then do let us know so we can investigate.
Rereading I have duplicated what cgsweat said, but either way don’t panic and just create a report when the merge seems wrong.
Is there a way to recognize these "enhanced" images? The pics I download from Instagram are most of the times 1080 pixels wide or high, I sometimes see larger numbers - are those enhanced?
I can imagine that other sources than Instagram may have other dimensions.
If you've used software then it's easy to spot. Upscaling introduces irregularities into the image because rather than enlarging the existing pixels, it has to create new ones to fill in the expanded area. So AI "guesses" what it will look like. It basically looks like what you would expect a machine to produce (skin texture begins to look somewhat alien, hair strands are blended together, etc.).
If you're referring to images that are 1440x1800, then that is a standard IG size, which will be the result depending on what program you use for downloading. However they are so extremely close in quality to 1080x1350 that the difference is usually negligible. So we typically just favor whoever uploaded first (assuming there are no other differences). We do check every image, and so sometimes if a 1440 image happens to be significantly higher in quality, then it will win the merge regardless of who uploaded first. Quality always wins.

Thanks a lot, both of you, honestly - but I've quit complaining about merged images, mostly for 2 reasons:
1 - I cannot tell for sure if an image has been artificially upscaled (even if I use rescaling for other stuff myself).
2 - Complaining for points is not what I'm here for, and not gonna cry to the Mods anymore for this kind of stuff; last time I did I felt kinda embarrased, for it wastes everybody's time. Hooray for the "scammer", what a winner they are (applause).

You sure? XD.

My upload (1080) was merged into this one, which is 1440:
But the only part that I can see which is significantly sharper, are the letters. But hey, I'm not here for letters 😉

Yeah no, there's a lot more fine detail in her skin and hair and such. I don't know if you're looking at them on your phone or not viewing them at the same full size or what, but I would have made the same decision with that merge.
I think whether the 1440p versions are actually better probably depends on the resolution of the original uploaded image. In some cases it just seems to be an internal upsizing by Instagram.
There seems to be a recent uptick in users uploading "enhanced" images with blown up resolutions. Just a FYI, these images will always lose in a merge. We prefer an original image from a trusted source (primarily a model or photographer's social media page).
