That is until it was discovered some users were naming her

If she's Slavic, she probably uses the Cyrillic alphabet. The letter "Я" is prnounced "ya" and can be spelled as either -ya (more common) or -ia. It's all phonetic.

The Latin alphabet is really not suited for Slavic languages, hence the confusion.
