It seems to me that the "everyone is on steroids" bunch are talking out of jealousy. I've seen enough to know that people with the right genetics and enough workout can become ripped and lean without using drugs. What you need steroids for is to become extremely big and bulky, especially in a short period of time. And of course to squeeze out that extra 1% performance in competitive sports.
Building an impressive physique (by this site's standards) naturally requires genetics that are much rarer than the genetics needed to do the same with PEDs. It's the exception, not the norm.
Many people on gear vehemently deny it, coincidentally enough calling their accusers "jealous" (I'm not implying you take gear). It requires much more work to bodybuild enhanced than to do the same naturally. Of course, the misinformed public would just dismiss their work as "cheating".
I know a couple of male bodybuilders who get testosterone prescribed by their GPs. I think they administer 2 injections per week to themselves. I don't know what the dosage is. One guy has been taking testosterone for about 20 years I think. He placed 5th in his first bodybuilding competition in 2019 (for Master's level which I think is for age 45 and up). Even Robbie Robinson admitted he used steroids while competing. Anyway, my friend told me there is no way he could have competed had he not been using testosterone over the years. What hope do women have?

I must agree with Green_Tea. Sure, folks with the right genetics can become ripped and lean, but the standard for "ripped and lean" in person vs. in photographs has become warped by images dominant in social media. Yes, people need steroids to gain and retain significant muscle mass beyond their genetic predisposition, but there's more to it than that. Steroids enable much more than just getting huge. One unspoken benefit is that steroids enable much faster recovery from training. This is why pro sports figures use them-- not to get huge, but just to have a functional edge for game after game as they age. But back to bodybuilding/fitness: for women specifically, the level of leanness and muscle hardess you see quite often here is NOT natural. All of these women are not coincidentally genetic lottery winners who just happened to diet correctly and put in hard work.

No dude, not even close.
Thinking that steroids are only needed to become extremely big and bulky is a massive myth. In the bikini division in bodybuilding competitions, which have the smallest competitors, the competitive women are all on PEDs. They're usually only on a mild compound like Anavar, but they are by no means natural.

Putting aside the ad hominem, I wouldn't surprised if the genetically gifted are MORE likely to use steroids. LeBron James practices dozens of hours a week, whereas I haven't shot a basketball in years. Is James better than me BECAUSE he practices? Not at all; he practices BECAUSE he's so good.
It's also worth mentioning that the vast majority of women do not have the genetics to naturally build big muscles. See, they lack a Y chromosome.
When people think of what makes a person tall, they assume genes. It used to be that the tallest humans had the best nutrition (that is to say environment > genes). However, now that the vast majority of people in industrialized countries receive a threshold of calories, we find genes play a much bigger role than environment. In highly enriched environments, genetic endowments will matter even more.
they all use steroids and they always will this question is moot lmao. the conversation should revolve around the normalized aesthetics of bodybuilders and not the drugs they use because the drugs themselves will ALWAYS be used. the problem is, in current bodybuilding culture to "win" competitions u need to not only use them but abuse them, hard.
steroids are not bad. surprisingly enough, they're quite good. but like with anything, it's very easy to have too much of a good thing. back in the 70s when bodybuilding was in its "golden age" competitors didn't literally kill themselves using insulin and hgh and shredding themselves to the bone with way too many drugs for the stage. the drugs got harsher as the demand got harsher and vice versa. people need to stop wanting to see dickskin-shredded bodybuilders, especially with women because imo bc it's looking less and less good with time. this is possible to change - the conversation just needs to start happening in the right ways
I know 2 big meaty buff girls and they don't take steroids. Anybody who says that they're necessary doesn't know much about getting buff.
Sure, if you want Natalya Truhkina level women then yeah, you need steroids and other stuff but to me, that's going too far and women like her will pay the price later in life.
Personally, I would like everybody to do it naturally but I'll never try to force anybody to stop taking anything, I just won't support it.
Depends on your personal interpretation of "big, meaty and buff" is.
I've seen guys comments on this site about someone being big or huge when really in my opinion they're not.
Oh, and btw, I say if you want it, go for it. There are no two ways around it in national level or pro bodybuilding. Some genetic freak could prove me wrong, but for 99+% you gotta use something.

I also think there is the huge misconception, event amongst the “schmoe” community, that only the very big, ripped and vascular women are using PEDs. In reality, a very good majority of the women on the site are probably on something, even if it’s just a minor compound like a Anavar, That include the small “bikini” class competitors.

There it is.
I'm a prime defender of FBB's using PED's to get bigger and better for competitions. They look great and incredibly sexy.
It's been an interesting thread. I watched with amusement with how many expressed contempt for anyone who actually cared for the health of the athlete. I have a friend who was an IFBB pro and was actively competing. She knew I loved her muscles, but she told me she was quitting her gear because she wanted to preserve her health - because of her family. She thought I'd be disappointed. I was actually pleased with her decision and proud that she was wise enough to make it. But I guess I'm a liar because anyone who says they care about any fbb is lying, just because.
