I click on a 'GIF' thumbnail like this one:

But all I get is this:

Never had a problem before...

I tried that same link, works fine:

Thanks for the info.  It still doesn't work for me - but my PC has been acting a little strange lately...

(Anyone have an idea how I can fix it?)

What browser and operating system are you using?

I have the same problem recently. Only with about half of the GIFs, the rest play just fine. It gives an error message, something like "MIME type not supported".
Firefox, most current version, Windows XP.
I suspect that some people are creating the GIFs with some newer software that uses a non-standard encoding.

Which version of Firefox?

Also, can you link to a few gifs that don't play, as well as a few that do? That way I can try to investigate any differences between them.

Firefox 47.0.1

Most recent ones won't open. A few random examples:

Most older ones do play just fine. A few from my faves:

Some more info:
Tried this one (
%27Ariano" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
%27Ariano) with old Internet Explorer 8 (which I never use, but it comes with Windows XP) - won't play, error message says "Your browser doesn't support HTML5 video".
Tried it also on my friends MacBook (which I don't use for this site!) - it plays fine with Safari.
I don't have Chrome installed. Would be worth trying with it.

Chainer - sorry to be slow replying - my browser is Firefox 47.0.1 my OS is Windoze XP Home SP3

I just updated VLC media player in the hope it was a plugin problem but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.

Henry099 - my situation is exactly the same as yours - the "older ones" you listed play fine, the more recent vids are no go.

Taking
%27Ariano" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
%27Ariano as an example I get the grey screen and message as shown in my original post. Curiously even though I cannot find a link to the video in Page Info I can download it by clicking on the grey box to bring up the player bar, then right clicking the bar and clicking 'Save Video with DownThemAll'. What downloads is 901497759.mp4 which plays just fine locally and also in Firefox (although I have to click Activate QuickTime to play it).

Can you try upgrading to firefox 49? I tried in that browser and the videos worked; I am curious to see if this is a difference in versions.

Edit: It also seems like you both use Windows XP, which may be the culprit. I no longer have that OS so I can't test using it.

According to Mozilla, when I check for updates, 47.0.1 is the latest version of FF  - maybe the rest of the world has moved on and left XP users behind? Time to go Ubuntu?

Ah 49 is a beta/developer version. As PC & Tech Authority says:
"One for experienced users or web developers who have a desperate need to access new Firefox features before they’re generally available. Everyone else should patiently wait for the stable version."

So I'll download it and take a look...

It's not a big issue for me, I was mostly puzzled by the "What video? There is no video" type of responses from Firefox.
Thanks for your help anyway.

It seems like older versions of Firefox are the culprit, although it seems a little inconsistent across different operating systems. Also, the above link doesn't have any screenshots from Windows XP (no one uses that anymore...).

I can vouch for Firefox 49 on the latest version of Linux Mint (essentially, Ubuntu), which is the default version without doing any special upgrades (despite what you said about it being a development version).

Now running Firefox 50.0b5 - website access fine. Still got the problem with GIFs...    :(

Here is some specific info:
GIF LOCATION                                                                           POSTED     PLAYS
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
           Sep 20th   No
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
  Sep 21st   Yes
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
                                 Sep 22nd   Yes
http://www.girlswithmuscle.com/731531/Ana-Cozar                 Sep 22nd   No
.... fast forwarding ...
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
          Oct 6th    Yes
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
             Oct 7th    Yes
" class="bbc_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">
                                 Oct 7th    No

There appears to be a strong correlation to the UPLOADER of the vid (which points to some change in the software used to create\capture the vids?) in the sense that I have not been able to play any video posted by tempp since the middle of September, whereas videos posted later by some other uploaders (see above list) are still working.

Ever since we've started allowing direct uploads of MP4s they are just copied onto the site, so it makes some sense that MP4s from different uploaders behave differently. Before, there was a script that made MP4s out of the uploaded gifs, so all the MP4s were made the same way.

For what it's worth, I just tried Firefox 48 and 49 on Windows 7, and all of the above linked mp4s played.

It might be time for you to upgrade your operating system.

I undestand XP probably can't cope with current mp4s or other video types that Firefox may offload to it but I thought that's what the VLC (which can cope with current mp4s and just about anything else) plugin was for? As you say, maybe time for a new OS...

Thanks for taking the time to look in to my problem. :)

Hi. The Videos don't work to me, too, a lot of months ago. Anyone internet browser. Owww. This is a torture.🥵

The button Play remains just hanging around without shows anything.

Please staff, kindly fix it, if is possible.

Samsung Galaxy mobiles. Android 9. The data mobile is turned ON and working.

Can you provide links to specific videos that don’t play? It may be down to a specific codec.

For example, videos with the VP9 codec won’t play on iPhones and need re-encoded to use H264, for maximum compatibility. This is all while using the MP4 container.

BTW No need to put “Please staff, fix it.” in bold. It isn’t constructive and feels a little insulting, as if we don’t care about the issue. Chainer has already addressed certain issues in the past and we generally delete any videos that don’t use a cross-platform codec, when we are aware of them.

Sorry Mister. I had edited my question.

I will adding the problem video links on here that cannot be played. By example this one:

Working fine on my iPhone. Does your device support H264 codec, for MP4 videos?
