There should be a sound coming when you have new messages in you profile.

Why is there not such a thing like a sound coming to remind people to ckeck their messages on their profiles?

I think the bold "New Notifications" text that doesn't go away until you click on it is fairly obvious.

Sound on websites is pretty annoying.

I could make it a different color to attract attention. I agree that a sound would be annoying.
